Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that reduces the production of uric acid in the body. It is commonly prescribed to patients with gout, arthritis caused by uric acid buildup, and chronic high uric acid levels. By controlling uric acid, it prevents joint pain, swelling, redness, and stiffness caused by urate crystal deposits. It is used as a long-term management therapy and should not be taken to treat sudden acute gout pain immediately.
